Adaptable to a variety of musical styles
Avocet cigar box guitars are made in a range of configurations (like conventional guitars), making them adaptable to a variety of musical styles. Our product range continues to evolve, informed by preferences and needs expressed by the guitar players we meet.
We normally stock some LEFT HANDED and also FRETLESS versions of our quitars but we can build to requirement upon request. All guitars are set up for playing before it leaves the workshop.
Strings & Tuning
Our guitars employ different combinations of regular guitar strings but the tunings are sometimes varied. The descriptions of models below are followed by the suggested tunings and in brackets, by the position that each string would occupy on a six-string guitar (assuming no. 1 as the thinnest string through to no. 6 as the thickest).
Jack in the Box Series
Available fretless or with standard or dulcimer fretboard, our entry level Avocet guitar really is one out of the box – an opportunity to enjoy the unique sound and feel of a quality cigar box guitar at a very affordable price. Built using Australian hardwood for the neck, paired with a genuine Cuban cigar box, this is a robust instrument, featuring a compensated bridge with under saddle piezo pickup.

Standard Electric
Our aim with the standard electric model has been to produce an affordable instrument without compromise to playability or sound quality. This model is based principally on decorative, paper covered cigar boxes, braced internally for strength and balance. It has a 600 mm neck/fingerboard, an attached bridge with compensated bone saddle and a magnetic pickup wired either directly to the jack or through tone and volume controls.

Expressions Series
Our Expressions series offers guitars more individualised in appearance than the standard model and with a broader range of features, including: electro-magnetic shielding, a humbucker or single coil pickup, painted or varnished boxes, removable neck, tone and volume controls, fully adjustable metal bridges and fret boards made from a variety of selected Australian & sustainably sourced timbers.

Elextra Series
These guitars are based predominantly on paper covered boxes but with construction features and equipment levels closely matching those of our Expressions series.
They divide into two variants: The COMPACT model with a 600 mm scale length but overall length of only 800 mm and the DART model with 830 mm (24.75 inch) scale.

Acoustic
In order to call our guitars acoustic, we believe that the volume and quality of sound produced (without amplification) should stand up and be heard alongside other acoustic instruments. This involves careful selection of boxes and attention to construction details. Our acoustic guitars are fitted with a bone nut & saddle and a fixed bridge housing an under-saddle piezo pickup for times when amplification may be needed.

For the sake of clarity, our guitars are grouped into several categories. Some of our instruments however remain outside these groupings and are more suitably described as ‘various’.
